JULY TO OCTOBER 2023

BOOKGIVING AND BOOK
DEVELOPMENT UPDATES

Between July 2023, when we last reported to you, to September 2023, we donated another 19,107 books, bringing this year’s total so far up to 36,140 children’s books.

Scenes from a CANVAS-led bookgiving day at Salaban Elementary School in Batangas last September 16, 2023. We gave away 250 copies of our “BenCab’s Activity Book for Children.” The event was sponsored by AJA Law Offices, which reached out and asked us to organize the bookgiving on the occasion of their 3rd Anniversary.

We also launched three new books for children. This December, we’ll be sure to send you all one complimentary copy of each title. And if you wish to buy more of these to give away as Christmas gifts (hint, hint), just let us know. You may also order copies directly from our online partner, Looking for Juan!

The latest book to emerge out of our Romeo Forbest Children’s Story Writing Competition. Written by multi-awarded author Genaro Gojo Cruz, and illustrated by Mr. S.

"Hanapin ang Sagot - Ano Ang Batas Militar?", written by Aldy Aguirre, Margarita Santos and Ergoe Tinio is an extensively researched activity book about the Marcos dictatorship. Stunning artworks by Aldy. Child friendly language, but no attempt to sanitize. We call it as it was. #NeverForget #WeRemember

This has the feel and look of a children’s book, and we’re sure kids will love it. But it’s not just a children’s book. It’s also a picture book for new parents. Written by Gigo Alampay and illustrated by June Digan, the book is based on CANVAS’ Manifesto for the Tumba-Tumba Children’s Museum of Philippine Art.

MUSEUM UPDATE

Construction and setting up of the first facilities for CANVAS’ Tumba-Tumba Children’s Museum of Philippine Art continues. As you can see from the pictures above, significant progress has been made on Leeroy New’s gallery installation since our report last June. We’re still hopeful that we can have the gallery turned over by November or early December. But definitely, it should be open for public viewing in time for our planned “If Trees Could Talk” International Art Biennale in February 2024.

Also set for installation by November will be monumental installations based on “The Tree Huggers”, a painting by Elmer Borlongan rendered as 15-foot sculptures by Lito Mondejar.

These will be permanent fixtures of the Museum, and collectively serve as an iconic backdrop for the Biennale.

And, in preparation still for the Biennale, construction is also now underway for two key facilities critical to our operations and service: “Tawag”, the Museum’s public restroom, and “Kulandong”, a modest multi-purpose facility which will temporarily serve as the office, storage area and kitchen of Tumba-Tumba, at least until full-fledged facilities are built in the coming few years.

Finally, we are pleased to let you know that we have also engaged the services of a professional fundraising company, Akubo, to prepare our strategic plan for a capital fundraising campaign for Tumba-Tumba. Akubo is led by its President, Marianne “Mayan” G. Quebral, a senior Development Consultant who specializes in Fundraising, Resource Mobilization, Non-Profit Management and Strategic Planning with over 3 decades of experience in progressive leadership roles. She is a pioneer in fundraising and trained at The Fund Raising School in Indiana, U.S.A. Mayan served as lead consultant for Venture for Fund Raising, a non-profit she co-founded in 1999 to provide fundraising training, mentoring and research for the non-profit sector. While at Venture, Mayan trained over 1,000 development professionals in over 24 countries. She also led gift giving motivation researches in the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Pakistan, Nepal, India and Bangladesh. Mayan has authored The Fund Raiser’s Guide to Fund Raising and Fund Raising 101.

We will be looking to raise around Three Hundred Million Pesos to build the rest of the Museum facilities, and a portion of the raised amount will be allocated to an endowment fund to help assure both CANVAS’ and Tumba-Tumba’s long-term sustainability. We are presently preparing the capital fundraising kit and communications materials, and will launch the campaign in the first quarter of 2024.

UPCOMING EVENTS

November 5-11, 2023

The Atrium, Parola College of Fine Arts Gallery, UP Diliman

We came up with the theme for this year's Outdoor Banner Exhibit: "More in Common", back in April. We wanted to use this annual group art exhibition to explore and highlight our shared humanity, values, aspirations, dreams and even fears, as a counterpoint to perceptions of division and intolerance that seem to be prevailing in these troubled times.

In light of the tragic events taking place in Gaza, "More In Common" as a theme to think about and remember, now seems even more timely, and universal. More than 75 creative responses were submitted for this show, and we hope that they will somehow help and be used to talk about what the times really call for: empathy, openness, conversation, humility and community.
